FirstMate – Quality Is the New Plan
Dolittle’s specializes in finding excellent pet foods. We are constantly on the lookout for food that will meet the criteria of today’s customer. Currently this means finding a food that is grain inclusive, great for skin and coat, and doesn’t break the bank. We see a trend in dog owners looking for foods often found in the big box stores. Unfortunately, when you take a deep dive into the ingredients of these foods you will find they lack quality ingredients. Over time this can produce dull coats, bad digestion, and increased hunger. We say abandon ship on these carb heavy foods before they sink your pup. Get on board with quality, join the FirstMate crew. (Did we go overboard on the nautical puns?)
Ahoy FirstMate! Here’s a food that is paying close attention to details. Mike Florian, the founder of FirstMate, started the company back in 1989 from a fishery in Vancouver. Today they process and produce the food in human grade EU certified facilities. The majority of their ingredients are coming from local sources. The two exceptions are duck from France, and lamb from Australia. Dolittle’s loves several things about the food. Mainly we love the amount of meat based protein found in the food. The meat content alone makes that big box food look like a big box of Cheerios. FirstMate is also calorically dense which means customers can feed less of the food.
HELPFUL TIP: Dolittle’s always recommends adding water to your dog’s food. This will help increase the general mass of the food without bumping up those calories.
FirstMate uses a unique process to add oil to the kibble. They call it their vacuum infused system, VIS for short. VIS enables FirstMate to get the oils deep into the kibble and not just on the surface. This is valuable for two reasons. One, dogs dig the flavor and two, it makes for a satisfying meal. Another thing to love is FirstMate’s attention to ingredients. They are using small fish like anchovies and sardines. Smaller fish are rich with omega oils which help enhance your pet’s coat. They are also less likely to be rich in heavy metals (we’re looking at you salmon). Rounding out the list of good ingredients are blueberries and cranberries to act as antioxidants and maintain urinary tract health.
Mike and his family continue to stay at the helm of FirstMate. They remain committed to quality ingredients and a short and simple list. Developing diets that are formulated for quality, health and safety is their mission statement. Among the FirstMate offerings you will find both grain free and grain friendly foods as well as canned food choices. There is peace of mind in knowing that all of the formulas are developed by FirstMate Executive Vice President Dr. Brad Hicks DVM.
