Avocado For All

Avocados Are Good for Your Dog, Too

Research has shown that avocados are a nutrient-dense healthy fat, a key element of maintaining a balanced diet for humans, but did you know that they are a wonderful fruit to share with your dog?

In small amounts, avocados can provide many of the same health benefits to dogs as they do humans, including vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, anti-inflammatory properties, and antioxidants. The list of nutritional benefits that avocados can provide dogs include:

  • Antioxidants

  • Amino acids

  • Fiber

  • Folate

  • Magnesium

  • Potassium

  • Vitamin A

  • Vitamin B3 (niacin)

  • Vitamin B6

  • Vitamin C

  • Vitamin E

These benefits are linked directly to supporting a dog’s bone health, skin, eyesight, and fur. The fleshy fruit part of the avocado is the safest, and most delicious, part to share with your four-legged friend. Here’s our tips on how to feed your dog avocados:

  • Only give your dog the fruit part of the avocado. Stay away from the core, skin, and leaves.

  • Keep the portion size small, based on the size of your dog. We recommend serving the avocado mashed, to aid in the digestion process.

  • Only give your dog plain pieces of avocado (no onions, garlic, etc.).

So, the next time you make avocado toast for breakfast or make a quick bowl of guacamole for game night, feel free to share some of that green goodness with your dog.

*If you feel like your dog is experiencing an adverse side effect after consuming avocado, please contact the ASPCA’s pet poison 24-hour helpline number at
