Pet Planet
10 Earth Friendly Pet Products
Every year more and more companies are introducing more eco-conscious products. Like you, we're very happy with these options. Here are several products that are environmentally friendly. Products that you and your pet and the planet will love.
1 . Toys It is hard to find toys that are earth friendly. While there are some toys on the horizon the best option right now is the good old fashion hemp rope toy. The good news is that there is a rope toy for everyone. We have the knot for the ball chaser, the rope for the tugger, and the rope knot for the fetcher.
2. Bowls Bamboo is finding new life as an antibacterial and antimicrobial material for bowls and more. Bamboo grows like crazy so it's a great renewable resource. Our bowls are decorated with natural dyes too.
3. Collars Earth Dog has been around for years and we love their solid hemp collars. They are as soft as your best blue jeans and durable enough to be around for years.
4. Shampoo Plant based cleaners are the best. Harvest is a small company in North Carolina that makes some of the best pet shampoo we have ever found. We love the way it moisturizes and the light natural scent won't make your dog want to roll in the next thing (right away).
5. Treats The new trend in treats features a more environmentally friendly packaging. Several companies have moved to an LDPE 4 package which, put simply, can be placed in curbside bins in Charleston County. Along with new packaging we're seeing improvements in compostable material, renewable resources, and a focus sustainability.
6. Poop Bags There are poop bags out there that are made from recycled plastics. While that is a good thing we have found a company that takes a step further with their compostable poop bags. If you do hot composting then you can toss the whole bag right on in.
7. Meaty Treats We were thrilled to find small farm meaty treats for dogs. Farmhound checks a lot of boxes for us. They are direct from farm to production. They’re local-ish (just over the border in GA). The products are naturally preserved and rich with flavor. The small farms use fair farming practices.
8. Cat Litter Each year over 2 million tons of sodium bentonite is strip mined in the US. That is the clay used in clumping litter and it’s not a renewable resource. The good news is that Dolittle’s sells Sustainably Yours cat litter. This litter is made from cassava root (a renewable resource) and clumps like clay. The odor control is great and it’s even flushable. It’s low tracking so there is less on your cat’s paws and it’s safe if ingested. Make the switch from clay and save the planet! Your cat will appreciate the difference.
9. Beds Finding something to fill your pets bed could have a tremendous impact on the environment. Currently polyfill is the preferred filler. With a Molly Mutt bed not only can you save the use of polyfill but you can keep some of your own textiles from entering the trash chain. Molly Mutt beds are duvets that are designed to hold your old clothes, towels, and other textiles.
10. Food We have several pet food manufacturers that are working toward more sustainable practices both in resourcing and production. We are seeing changes come through in packaging to be more earth friendly. Some of the current stand-outs are Open Farm, Logic and Stella and Chewy’s.
